A month ago my wife bought me/us two new table top games to play on game night. One of those was Love Letter. This is a really fun game and for the price you can’t go wrong.
What You Get
The game comes with:
- Card Deck
- 4 Reference Cards
- Tokens of Affection (little red cubes for keeping track of points)
- Little Red Velvet Bag to store game in
What You Really Get
A fast-paced game that is part luck and part skill that can be set up and put away in less than a minute. The game is set for 2-4 players. Each player is given one card from the deck (there are only 18 cards in the deck). On a player’s turn they draw a card from the pile and then discard/play one of their cards. There are 8 different cards in the deck and each does something different. The object of the game is to knock the other players out of the round and/or have the highest card (numerically) at the end of the round when there are no more cards to pull from the deck. Once a player earns a set number of points that player is the winner.
Some rounds only take a turn or two to determine a victor. Other rounds can take the entire deck to sort the winner. The game relies on bluffing, card counting, a little luck, and craftiness. The biggest draw to this game for me is the fact that it makes a great spur of the moment game to bring out when you have 15 minutes to kill. There’s no big box to lug around and it is surprisingly deep at times.
Though at other times you are at the whims of fate. Sometimes the cards just land a certain way and you lose at no fault of your own. This is seen way more in two player games due to the fact that there is only two players. This can get frustrating but since the game goes so quickly one can always earn back their honor in the next game.
If you’re looking for a rules-light and very fun game give it a try.
