It’s been a little while since I’ve given an update for Wheel of Time stuff. This is because I was unable to spend the needed time with my friend that I was usually spending with him to work on them due to the lenten season. It’s still going to be iffy for a while until sap season ends, but I’ll likely be able to get together with him once or twice in the coming weeks to work on it.
Okay, so I’m guessing that you want to get a look at the Aes Sedai (especially if you’re a reader of the Wheel of Time books). Well, I’m sorry, but it’s sorta kinda an April Fools’ Day joke. Only sort of, because I was planning about talking about them either way, but I do not have a class playbook together. It just kind of worked out that it’s coming out April 1st.
First off, the idea is that I will likely be splitting the male and female channelers into two separate Channeler classes. Possibly not, but that’s my current thought. Secondly, I do not wish to limit channelers to just Aes Sedai and Asha’man. My friend and I agree that we will be allowing all of the possible channeler flavors from the world, including damane and their sul’dam, windfinders, the Kin, and Wise Ones. Likely, some of these will be separate from the base female channeler class, simply due to their large variance from the typical Aes Sedai (I’m looking at Wise Ones for sure; possibly damane and sul’dam). You will be able to choose what type of channeler you are as a sort of plug-in to the Female Channeler playbook. It’ll allow you to swap out a decent swathe of the playbook (largely the Build – our systems replacement of Race -, a starting move, Bonds, and some equipment). Initially, we’ll only be providing a couple different Ajahs of Aes Sedai, but the other variants will come eventually.
I would like your opinion on the ideas presented so far, but the biggest thing I’d like an opinion on is an additional set of “Ability Scores”, in a way. Those who’ve read the books know that female channelers are generally better at working with air and water, while male channelers are better with fire and earth. Then there’s spirit, which can be anywhere on the spectrum with anyone. I want to represent these elements with a bonus that goes from -1 to +1. For women, they can have a 0 or +1 in air and water, a -1 or 0 in earth and fire, and anything from -1 to +1 in spirit. There will be a maximum that they can all total up to (likely, to maintain balance with other classes, it must total out to 0), but that’s undecided so far. I want these numbers to come in as bonuses and penalties to rolls involving channeling, along with whatever ability score will be used to channel (probably Wisdom, maybe Intelligence).
These scores will only be able to increase twice: once in levels 2-5, and once in levels 6-10. Even then, you’ll only be able to increase one element by one each time.
The stats you have in those elements can be used to limit access to certain “spells”, as well as bolstering rolls for using them. Channelers will be using a spell-like system, but my friend and I will work to keep them fairly open.
So, tell me what you think. Do think this is an okay idea, or is it being unnecessarily complicated? Do you have an alternative idea? Comment below and let me know.
