City of Judas Quick Start

At the request of Davide Pidgenedoli I’ve written a quick start for City of Judas, an interesting and very crunchy hack for Apocalypse World. City of Judas takes place before and around the Crusades where everyone plays a mercenary for the Iron Fists. This game is a bit different than AW in the sense that the players work together for a single mercenary company, so you have a common cause to work together built in. The games I’ve played have leaned towards more Dungeons and Dragons in terms of working together and lack of in party fighting.

This quick start will help establish relationships among the mercenaries. Note that just because you work together doesn’t mean you need to like them. This quick start will have questions to ask the group to help figure out who is playing what. Then there will be love letters to the players with some custom moves. I’ll finish it off with some things the group could run into and see through their adventure.

  • Who here is in charge of your group?
    • Are you in charge because you were born to lead (Leader), you’ve been doing this longer than everyone (Veteran), or you have a pack of vicious fighters that follows you (Raider)?
  • Who here thinks the leader is going to get you all killed?
    • Are you used to working alone (Scout), morally better than everyone (Priest), the soldier that fixes the leader’s mistakes (Barber)?
  • Who here is the mysterious new person to join the company?
    • Are you a legendary sell sword trying to keep a low profile (Sell Sword), a dark figure that no one likes to talk about (Sorcerer), a disgraced knight trying to reclaim their honor (Horseman)?
  • Everyone else, what’s your story?
    • Hand out the rest of the play books.

Love Letters

  • When you explore the off limits lower depths of the Iron Hand’s fort by yourself, roll +brains.
    • On a 10+, ask another player any question you want about them. They have to answer truthfully.
    • On a 7-9, ask two questions as above. One answer must be truthful, one is a lie.
  • When you head to the red light district for a good time, roll +charm.
    • On a 10+, hold 2. On a 7-9, hold 1.
      • You can spend your hold 1 for 1 to take +1 forward to learn something important about a prominent NPC.
    • On a miss you catch syphillis. Sorry mate.
  • When you use your station to get what you want from an NPC, roll +steele.
    • On a 10+, they give you what you want no questions asked. Thank you sir, may I have another?
    • On a 7-9, they give you what you want. I’m sure they’re not bitter about it. Probably.

Sights, Sounds, and Smells

  • Some naked/near naked children playing in the streets
  • Slop bucket from last night getting poured into the streets from a 2nd story window
  • Beggars asking for coin
  • A man being mugged
  • A religious procession
  • A prince and his entourage
  • A storm is coming
  • Slavers driving their herd
  • Rotten fruit being thrown from an angry mob
  • A woman screaming from child birth

If you get the chance to play City of Judas be sure to let Davide know how it went. He’s been looking for play testers for a while and would love to get some feed back. I’ve played it, and if you’d like something a bit more crunchy than AW while still being Powered by the Apocalypse this might do it for you. Thanks for reading mates.
